Let us acknowledge that the campus of Winthrop University and surrounding areas occupy the traditional and ancestral land of the Sugaree, Waxhaw, and Catawba People. We share the responsibilities to remember the histories of violence that precede our existence here, to recognize Indigenous and Black claims to life and land, and to re-center those perspectives as we pursue better ways of caring for each other and for this land. Along with this acknowledgement, let us explore what actions we can make to foster more honest and harmonious relations with this land and with each other.
Visit the links above to learn more about the native people of this area and their stories. Let us all consistently seek opportunities to learn, grow, and support the empowerment of those who have been marginalized and oppressed.
